The Magnificent Macaws

In general, the large macaws are big, have the potential of being noisy, outgoing and active birds. They are among the most intelligent of the parrots, they possess the ability to learn to talk well, play like puppies or kittens and can learn tricks. Many are very brightly colored, but are surprising difficult to see in the wild when perching in the foliage and flying with the sun behind them.

Macaws are a very popular companion parrot to share your life with. They must be provided with lots of space, exercise and require constant entertainment. The large macaws have the most powerful beaks in the parrot world, a beak that demands respect. Their beaks are designed to open brazil nuts, walnuts and the really tough to open macadamia nuts. Keeping perches in a macaws cage can be a challenge as they love to use those beaks to gnaw through the hardest of perches.

All of the large macaws are equipped with a powerful voice. The nice thing about the macaws is that you can easily distract any unacceptable noise to acceptable vocalization. If our macaws start vocalizing in an unacceptable manner all it takes is for one of us to start singing and they quickly change to the acceptable vocalizing of singing.

The majority of the mini macaws are mostly green in color. They still have the bare ‘macaw cheeks’ which is a distinguishing feature of all macaws. The behavior of the mini macaws is similar to that of the large macaws. The mini macaws are a excellent choice for those that wish to share their life with a macaw but lack the room to accommodate the needs of the large macaws.
